Eight men from various countries were deported from the US to South Sudan, despite most having no ties to the nation. Tom Homan, the US border czar, openly admitted he does not know what has become of the men since their arrival.
The group, which includes individuals from Cuba, Laos, and Myanmar, was initially held in Djibouti after a court intervened. Two Supreme Court decisions later allowed their transfer to South Sudan, where local authorities say they are being screened.
Homan’s comments highlight the lack of US oversight and support for deportees once they leave American custody. This hands-off approach has drawn criticism from human rights advocates and sparked debate over the ethics of third-country deportations.
The administration’s broader deportation strategy has also involved sending migrants to countries like El Salvador and negotiating with other nations to accept non-citizen deportees.
