The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust is calling on fans to begin a “phase of renewal” by ending their boycotts and returning to Hillsborough. The plea comes after owner Dejphon Chansiri, the target of the protests, placed the club into administration, resulting in a 12-point penalty.
The trust declared its “phase of resistance” had “achieved its goal” with Chansiri’s exit. Now, they say, the “club’s most urgent need is stability and income.” Fans had boycotted the recent game against Middlesbrough, but thousands are expected to return for Saturday’s match against Oxford.
The administration, triggered by $pounds{}$1 million in unpaid taxes and months of missed wage payments, leaves the club on -6 points, 15 points from safety. Fans described the day as “bittersweet,” celebrating Chansiri’s departure while mourning the points deduction. Seats spelling his name were removed from the stands.
The club is now being run by Begbies Traynor, who are seeking a new owner. Manager Henrik Pedersen, who remains optimistic, called the development a necessary “fresh restart” and believes the club has a “bright future.”
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy used the occasion to stress the need for the new independent football regulator. Having seen her own club, Wigan, face administration, she said she knows “everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution.”
