India is advancing its plans to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia. Moscow has already presented a cost proposal to initiate negotiations. The Cabinet Committee on Security is anticipated to make the final decision once the price discussions conclude and clearance from the Finance Ministry is secured. The initial contract for five S-400 systems, agreed upon in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is on track for completion with the final delivery scheduled for November 2026.
The new acquisition aims to bolster India’s air defense, particularly in the eastern sector bordering China. The S-400 systems have proven their effectiveness, notably during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, which has reinforced India’s interest in expanding its fleet. In parallel, India is yet to finalize a decision on purchasing Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Despite the Indian Air Force’s interest, the acquisition remains undecided as China continues to deploy J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet. The strategic balance in the region significantly influences India’s defense procurement strategies and considerations.
