InterContinental Phuket Resort has achieved a significant milestone by receiving certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), marking it as the first InterContinental hotel in Thailand to earn this recognition. It also stands as the third property under IHG Hotels & Resorts in the country to receive this prestigious sustainability certification. This achievement was verified through an independent audit conducted by Control Union Certifications, a GSTC-accredited body, which evaluated the resort across four key areas: management, socioeconomic impacts, cultural impacts, and environmental performance.
The resort has embraced various sustainability initiatives, including water and energy conservation, food-waste reduction, and community engagement activities in Phuket. One notable initiative is the implementation of an Oklin Food Waste Composter, which can process around 125 kilograms of food waste daily, reducing waste volume by 80-90% within 24 hours and converting it into fertilizer. This process yields approximately 360 kilograms of fertilizer monthly, which benefits local organizations, schools, gardens, and farms. Additionally, AI-based food-waste monitoring systems aid culinary teams in optimizing food portions, purchasing, and inventory practices.
Environmental efforts extend to Kamala Beach through the Proud Kamala program, which focuses on maintaining a three-kilometer stretch of coastline. The resort also collaborates with the Ocean For All Foundation’s “License to Clean” initiative, utilizing a coastal-cleaning catamaran to remove waste from the waters around Kamala for recycling, reuse, or disposal. In terms of water conservation, the resort meets about 80% of its landscape irrigation needs with treated wastewater and employs rainwater harvesting to minimize dependence on potable water.
The resort is also distinguished by its LEED Gold certification, achieved through energy-efficient measures such as LED lighting, motion sensors, lighting controls, and energy monitoring, contributing to an estimated 25% energy savings. Local sourcing is another pillar of the resort’s sustainability strategy, involving collaboration with over 19 farmers and communities in Thailand, including Phang Nga. This initiative is complemented by partnerships with Chulalongkorn University and Kasetsart University at the Sipping Tiger, where cocktails are crafted using locally sourced plants and botanicals.
General Manager Bjorn Courage has highlighted that the GSTC certification serves as an independent validation of the resort’s sustainability efforts, providing a framework for continued improvement in environmental and community programs. Situated on Kamala Beach, InterContinental Phuket Resort features 221 rooms, suites, and villas, along with a range of guest amenities such as restaurants, bars, wellness facilities, and swimming pools.
