South Korean chip giants Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are likely to avoid the 100% import tariffs on semiconductors recently announced by Donald Trump, thanks to their ongoing commitments to build manufacturing facilities in the United States.
A top US official clarified that foreign semiconductor firms will be exempt from the tariffs if they actively invest in building plants on American soil. The condition includes registering the project with the Commerce Department and having the construction independently audited throughout the process.
Samsung currently operates a semiconductor foundry in Austin, Texas, and is constructing a new fabrication plant in Taylor, set to open in 2026. SK hynix is investing in an advanced chip packaging plant in the US, aiming to begin mass production by 2028.
The policy, aimed at boosting domestic semiconductor production, is expected to channel massive investments into the US technology sector. Industry analysts believe that both Samsung and SK hynix are well-positioned to qualify for the exemption under these terms.
