Zimbabwe delivered a cricketing masterclass in Colombo, defeating Australia by 23 runs to record one of the greatest upsets in T20 World Cup history. The comprehensive victory has left Australia’s tournament in tatters and demonstrated that Zimbabwe deserves far more respect than their 11th-place ICC ranking suggests.
Australia’s decision to chase after winning the toss backfired spectacularly as their batting order disintegrated under disciplined Zimbabwean bowling. The procession began when Josh Inglis holed out for 8 off the first ball that Blessing Muzarabani bowled. What followed was a nightmare sequence as Cameron Green and Tim David both fell for ducks off consecutive deliveries, caught behind by the wicketkeeper.
Acting captain Travis Head’s dismissal for 17 completed a disastrous powerplay, with Australia stumbling to 29 for 4. The early wickets put immense pressure on the middle order and exposed Australia’s over-reliance on their top-order batsmen. It marked a rare occasion where Australia’s vaunted batting depth appeared more like a weakness than a strength.
The recovery effort fell on the shoulders of Matthew Renshaw and Glenn Maxwell, who combined intelligently for a 77-run partnership. Renshaw was particularly impressive, striking the ball cleanly and reaching his maiden T20I fifty with authority. He finished with 65 off 44 balls, showing maturity beyond his limited international experience. Maxwell’s 31 came in typical flamboyant fashion, but both players chopped onto their stumps at crucial junctures, leaving Australia’s hopes in tatters.
Brian Bennett’s unbeaten 64 had earlier given Zimbabwe a competitive total of 169-2, while Muzarabani’s devastating spell ensured Australia never recovered from their early collapse. Australia now faces elimination unless they defeat Sri Lanka and favorable results elsewhere keep their net run rate competitive enough to advance.
