Following his diplomatic tour across Europe, Lee reported that he directly addressed the matter with EU leaders, urging them to ensure that the revised system does not act as a trade barrier. He emphasized South Korea’s position as a free trade agreement partner and strategic ally of the EU, advocating for special consideration in the upcoming regulations.
The European Union is preparing to implement a new steel import regime starting July 1. This initiative is part of broader efforts to tackle global steel overcapacity and safeguard European manufacturers from the surge in imports. South Korean officials have expressed that discussions with their EU counterparts have shown considerable progress, and they remain hopeful about negotiating favorable terms for South Korea.
In addition to trade discussions, President Lee’s meetings with European leaders covered a range of topics, including economic security, peace initiatives on the Korean Peninsula, and developments in the Middle East. During his European tour, President Lee visited Brussels, Italy, the Vatican, and France, where he participated in the G7 Summit. These engagements highlighted South Korea’s commitment to strengthening its diplomatic ties and addressing key international concerns alongside prominent global leaders.
