A large-scale drone attack on Moscow and its surrounding areas has resulted in at least three fatalities, significant damage to an oil refinery, and the evacuation of hundreds from damaged residential buildings. The strike, which coincided with the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, has drawn attention to the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Russian authorities reported intercepting over 1,600 drones since the onset of the attack, with approximately 450 targeting the capital city. Despite these efforts, several drones managed to hit the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building in the Moscow region, prompting emergency services to evacuate around 400 residents from a 21-story apartment complex.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the operation aimed at disrupting key Russian energy and logistics infrastructure. This drone assault represents a continuation of Ukraine’s strategy to employ long-range drones and domestically produced weaponry to strike deep into Russian territory, focusing particularly on energy facilities.
The timing of the attack is notable as it aligns with Russia’s first parliamentary elections since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Russian officials have accused Ukraine of attempting to interfere with the electoral process. Meanwhile, Kyiv remains committed to its strategy of targeting Russian military and energy infrastructures as part of its broader conflict efforts.
