Korean basketball teams have achieved a remarkable feat at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, securing medals in all four categories of men’s and women’s 5×5 and 3×3 competitions. The men’s 5×5 team ended a 12-year title drought by defeating Japan 67-57 in the final, while the men’s 3×3 team claimed Korea’s first Asian Games title in the discipline with a 19-10 victory over Qatar.

The women’s 3×3 team also made history by earning bronze after beating Thailand 21-8, marking Korea’s first Asian Games medal in that event. Meanwhile, the women’s 5×5 team reached the final, following a significant win against China with a score of 85-80 in the semifinals.

This success comes as a much-needed boost for Korean basketball, which has been grappling with waning popularity and challenges in nurturing domestic talent. Although the Korean Basketball League recorded its highest attendance in nine seasons with 811,185 spectators during the 2025-26 regular season, this figure still falls short of the record 1.2 million attendees seen in the 2013-14 season.

Korea’s basketball development is limited by a relatively small pool of school and university players, with only 2,351 registered student-athletes, a stark contrast to Japan’s more extensive system. Despite these limitations, the recent success has been bolstered by increased international exposure and structured preparation, especially for the 3×3 team, which participated in both domestic tournaments and international competitions prior to the Asian Games.

However, basketball officials and analysts emphasize the need for continued investment in player development, international competition, domestic leagues, and training infrastructure to sustain this progress. The women’s teams, in particular, face ongoing challenges in maintaining sufficient numbers for full 5×5 training sessions.
