The United States is pushing for a June conclusion to the Russia-Ukraine war and has proposed Miami as the location for next week’s peace negotiations, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This represents a major step forward in American mediation efforts.
Zelensky made the announcement in remarks to reporters that were released early Saturday. The Ukrainian president noted that this would be the first occasion where the US has offered to host Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams on American soil, indicating Washington’s willingness to assume a more direct role in facilitating peace. “They say that they want to do everything by June,” Zelensky emphasized, highlighting the ambitious timeline set by US officials.
The planned Miami session would be the third installment of US-brokered negotiations, following two rounds already held in Abu Dhabi since January. The Abu Dhabi talks produced a significant humanitarian achievement through a major prisoner exchange but failed to bridge the gap on territorial issues. Russia currently controls roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory and is demanding recognition of these occupied areas plus further territorial gains in the Donetsk region.
Ukraine has firmly and consistently opposed any territorial concessions, viewing them as unacceptable violations of sovereignty that would reward aggression. Russian negotiators have insisted that territorial demands are essential to any agreement and have threatened to pursue military options if talks do not yield favorable territorial outcomes. This fundamental disagreement over borders continues to obstruct the path to peace despite intensive international efforts.
The diplomatic initiatives proceed amid continued military conflict. In a Saturday video statement, Zelensky revealed that Russia had attacked facilities critical to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations during the previous night. The strikes forced several nuclear reactor units to reduce their output, with one unit automatically shutting down. Zelensky characterized the attacks as unprecedented terrorism and demanded that Russia prove its negotiating sincerity by halting strikes on essential civilian infrastructure.
