Amid ongoing tensions over the conflict in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul engaged in significant talks during the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting marked the first dialogue between the foreign ministers of Russia and Germany since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The discussions focused on bilateral relations and the situation in Ukraine, with German officials reiterating Berlin’s established stance on the conflict. Both ministers explored issues impacting Russia-Germany relations, a diplomatic effort underscored by recent strains between the two nations. Notably, Germany has accused Russia of attempting to target two cargo planes at Leipzig airport in August with a drone loaded with explosives, an allegation adding further strain to their interactions.

This diplomatic engagement follows Lavrov’s last conversation with a German foreign minister in January 2022, when he met with then-Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock shortly before Russia’s invasion.
