In a significant move highlighting its growing influence, Vietnam played a pivotal role in enhancing the cooperation between ASEAN and Russia during the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which marked 35 years of dialogue relations. Vietnam’s Foreign Minister, Lê Hoài Trung, emphasized the country’s substantial contributions to the summit, which were instrumental in promoting ASEAN’s central role and strengthening the strategic partnership between the bloc and Russia.
Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng led the Vietnamese delegation with a focus on fostering dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful dispute resolution, while underscoring the importance of respecting international law. Vietnam proposed the expansion of collaboration in critical sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These proposals were part of broader discussions that led to the adoption of new frameworks aimed at bolstering ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a major pillar of this partnership.
Adding to its commitments, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, a move that underscores its dedication to nurturing future regional cooperation. The announcement reflects Vietnam’s proactive approach in taking a leadership role to ensure sustained engagement and collaboration within the region.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, focusing on expanding cooperation in areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport. These discussions highlight the mutual interests and shared goals between Vietnam and Russia in strengthening their bilateral relations.
Vietnam has stated that the outcomes of the summit will not only fortify ASEAN–Russia relations but also enhance regional stability and create new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across the Eurasian landscape. These developments underscore the strategic importance of Vietnam in facilitating dialogue and collaboration in the region, positioning itself as a key player in advancing multilateral partnerships.
