Donald Trump has acknowledged deploying significant US naval forces toward Iran while maintaining absolute secrecy about his decision-making process regarding potential military action. In remarks to reporters on Saturday, Trump declined to reveal whether he had reached final conclusions about how to confront Tehran. “I certainly can’t tell you that,” the president said, though he did confirm that America has sent “really big powerful ships heading in that direction,” fueling speculation about the timeline and scope of possible operations.
The crisis revolves around Iran’s nuclear programme, which Western intelligence services assess is designed to develop nuclear weapons despite Iranian denials. Trump indicated that despite military preparations, his administration has not given up on diplomatic solutions. “I hope to negotiate something that’s acceptable,” the president stated, making clear that his preferred outcome would be “a negotiated deal that would be satisfactory with no nuclear weapons.”
The president’s current nuclear-focused strategy marks a change from his recent emphasis on Iran’s domestic repression. Trump had threatened military retaliation if Iranian forces killed protesters during widespread demonstrations that erupted in late December. Those protests peaked on January 8 and 9, and Iranian authorities have since confirmed that over 3,000 people died during the unrest. However, Tehran claims most casualties were security personnel or bystanders killed by violent demonstrators rather than peaceful protesters.
Trump also responded to reported comments from Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister about the strategic implications of US military hesitation. The Saudi official allegedly warned that backing away from strikes would embolden Iran, but Trump provided a measured response acknowledging different perspectives. “Some people think that and some people don’t,” he said, suggesting his administration is weighing various strategic viewpoints before making irreversible commitments.
In Tehran, authorities have launched a public messaging offensive featuring billboards and banners throughout the capital. Among the most provocative is a massive poster depicting an American aircraft carrier being destroyed, sending a clear message of defiance to Washington. Despite this hostile imagery, Trump revealed that diplomatic channels remain open. “They’re talking to us, seriously talking to us,” he said of Iranian officials, while expressing uncertainty about whether these talks will produce meaningful results. The president’s own skepticism about Iran’s willingness to abandon its nuclear ambitions suggests that military conflict remains a very real possibility in the near future.
